LESTER HORTON DANCE AWARDS
The 18th annual Lester Horton Dance Awards were handed out Sunday night at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica. The Method Contemporary Dance Company took top honors for “This is Not an Exit,” choreographed by company director Bradley Michaud. Michaud also landed an additional award for outstanding achievement in long-form choreography.
Former hip-hop artist Jacob “Kujo” Lyons picked up two awards for his work in Lux Aeterna Dance Company’s “Metanoia” – honored male dance and outstanding achievement in short-form choreography. Lyons has successfully made the transition from street to stage, and as a choreographer merged the classical with the contemporary. (click on title to see video of Lux Aeterna performing “Metanoia”)
The honored female performer was Drea Sobke for her work in “Arrive” with the Backhausdance Company, and the outstanding achievement in world dance award went to Sohini Ray for “Gita-Govinda.”
The Dance Resource Center presents the Lester Horton Dance Awards every year to celebrate and honor the people who keep dance thriving in Southern California.
