The key to his work is the word production as it relates to the ART OF MEASURE. The art of measurement for the purpose of production is the concern of the article. The writer even makes an attempt to measure the man, however thoughtfully-reverently even.
But if one concerns themselves with the ART OF MEASURE when viewing the work one may find oneself taking in more in the way of info during the ongoing experience of viewing it. As the writer ultimately concludes, getting a grip on the maker reveals very little if anything about what has been made. Likewise, if one makes no attempt to get a grip on what exactly stands before them while viewing the work one might fare better in terms of revelation of info.

I met Oliver in Carrara, Italy during the winter of '84/85' while I was there working on a large marble sculpture. He had taken the studio of Manuel Neri for the "off season" and set to work drawing and directly carving several marbles of varying scale. Carrara is a small town and it doesn't take long for one american artist to discover another, they kind of stand out. In any case, most of the ex-pats worked into the evening and Manuel's/Oliver's studio became the gathering spot for a number of us to b.s., compare experience and exchange an idea or two whilst enjoying the local wine. It didn't take long to make the observation that most of the recurring attendees of these late-night soirees liked what Oliver had in his head and continued to hang with him until his time in Carrara came to an end. Fast friends as it were and I was one of them. Some folks have a natural ability to impart their experience to the willing and Oliver was the real item. A natural. You better bring your "A" game though, whether it's art or music or the human condition, he's been there, he's been around.

Wow!! I think the piece on my Uncle was wonderful and vividly profound. I could visualize just how everything was in his mind just from the words spoken.

It's an interesting and exciting feeling when you sit down and read the works and thoughts of a family member that, throughout your life you know what they do for a living, but in your world this is still just your family. You miss them, worry about them, converse with them and yet none of it changes who they are to you until you get a glimpse of their world through someone else's eyes. Oliver has always been a great artist in my eyes, the rest of the world just needed to "see it for themselves"!

Thank you for understanding the art as well as the person!

Good story! I knew Oliver Jackson in St. Louis as a very inspiring, young art instructor. He really cared about his students.

I've never heard the investment required in learning to see and having the work reveal itself to one's own consciousness and experience since Rothko said, "It is what it is." Precisely.

Excellent to find this article on Oliver. He was and still is one of my favorite artists. He is very intelligent and has a dynamic personality. I appreciate his boldness just as much as I appreciate his tenderness.

Many more painting and sculpting years ahead!
